Exeter Globe Backpackers is proud to be an "old school" independent family run hostel. We have been welcoming people from all around the world since June 1999.

Our tourist hostel is just a few minutes walk from Exeter’s city centre with its wide range of pubs, cafes, restaurants and clubs and nine hundred year old Gothic cathedral and the picturesque historic waterway and quay. Globe Backpackers is ideal for travellers and backpackers looking for a clean, comfortable, and friendly place to stay while enjoying our beautiful surroundings.

Our 2000 year old city is centrally located in the region of Devon and Cornwall making it the perfect place to base yourself to go on plenty of day trips to the coast, Dartmoor National Park, the Eden project and much more. Easily accessible from London, Bristol, Bath and Cardiff, Exeter really puts you in the middle of things.

We are housed in a Grade II listed townhouse with an incredible history of its own.

In 1898 our building was used as the headquarters of the 1st Wessex Royal Army Medical Corps Territorials who went on to be awarded the French Croix de Guerre for exceptional bravery.

​

During World War 1 outpatient casualties were billeted in our building by the amazingly inspiring woman named Georgina Buller (daughter to General Sir Redvers Henry Buller who was awarded many medals including the Victoria Cross).

And in World War 2 it was the Headquarters of the Home Guard!

Our building is a rare survivor of mass demolition which took place in Exeter in the 1970's  in the name of progress for a road project.  The people of Exeter protested and stood in front of bulldozers and wrecking balls to save our building which they hold in such affection to this day.
